Licence keys and seats

Your licence key arrives by email from Polar immediately after payment, and it looks like DIAGRAM-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX.

Entering it

The app asks on first launch. It validates the key once against Polar, then remembers it, so you can work offline afterwards. It re-checks occasionally, which is how a refunded or revoked key eventually stops working.

Seats

A seat is a person, not a device.

  • Personal is one seat. Install it on your laptop, your desktop and a VM if you want.
  • Team is five seats, so five people, each with their own key.

Sharing one key across a team is the thing not to do. Not because anything will dramatically stop working, but because the activation count is visible to us and it is the one thing that makes a refund conversation awkward.

Checking a key

Paste it into the licence checker. It will tell you whether the key is live, which tier it belongs to, how many activations it has used, and when it expires — and nothing about the customer it belongs to.

Moving to a new machine

Just enter the key again. If you have hit the activation limit, email support and it will be reset — this is not a thing anyone gets charged for.

What "twelve months of updates" means

Every update published within twelve months of your purchase is yours. After that:

  • the version you have keeps working, forever;
  • new versions are not included, and buying again is optional, not required.

There is no phone-home that disables the software when the update window closes. The licence is perpetual and the key stays valid.

If the key stops working

Three things cause it, in order of likelihood:

  1. A typo. Paste rather than type; the checker will confirm it.
  2. A refund. Refunding a purchase revokes its key — that is what a refund is.
  3. Polar was unreachable when the app tried to re-check. The app keeps working on the last good answer, so this is usually invisible; if it is not, check your network and try again.

If none of those fit, email us.
